About CAPILLARYS 3 DBS

Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) is a well‑established technology for screening hemoglobin disorders and is recognized for delivering high‑quality, reliable results. Sebia’s CAPILLARYS 3 DBS represents the latest generation of instruments dedicated to newborn hemoglobin screening, providing a streamlined workflow and outstanding analytical performance.

The CAPILLARYS 3 DBS is a fully automated Capillary Electrophoresis instrument that uses 12 parallel capillaries to perform multiple hands‑free electrophoretic separations simultaneously at high throughput.

The CAPILLARYS 3 DBS allows direct analysis of samples from microplate wells and delivers fully automated electrophoretic separation—from dried blood spots on filter paper (Guthrie cards) through the final electrophoretic profile. The system manages the entire workflow, including sample identification, dilution, incubation, capillary washing, sample injection into capillaries, migration, protein detection, results processing, and data transfer to the computer interface.

This instrument offers a compelling alternative to commonly used technologies such as IEF and HPLC for laboratories involved in newborn hemoglobin screening. It combines full sample traceability, high‑quality analytical results, and high throughput, while significantly reducing hands‑on time.

Key Benefits

The CAPILLARYS 3 DBS instrument is designed to address the evolving needs of modern laboratories, offering a comprehensive solution with multiple key benefits.
  • High Throughput instrument

Up to 74 samples per hour, enabling newborn screening laboratories to handle their fluctuating workload and quickly transmit results to pathologists and clinicians.

  • High Autonomy

Up to eight full 96‑well microplates can be processed in a single run without requiring any reagent refill. This substantially reduces hands‑on time and allows laboratory staff to focus on higher‑priority tasks.

  • Automatic Reagent Control

RFID tags on all reagents and on the embedded Hb AF Control enable smooth, efficient reagent management and reduce the need for user intervention.

  • Full Traceability

Traceability is ensured from sample punch to final result, eliminating transcription errors such as manual entry of sample IDs.

Test and consumables

  • Flexible positions for reagents allow for the optimisation of on-board reagent management
  • RFID identification for all reagents (reagent type, lot number, expiration date, volume) allows comprehensive traceability throughout workflow
  • RFID identification for Hb AF control (lot number, expiration date, date of first use, count of tests performed, and remaining tests) ensures full traceability and monitoring of the migration control’s use

Ergonomics

  • Embedded user interface with a touch screen
  • Automatic start-up and shutdown with daily scheduling options
  • Visual alarms (with instrument notifications)
  • A dedicated workstation pilots the instrument and manages results

Instrument details

  • Uses barcoded microplates (included in the CAPI 3 NEONAT Hb reagent kit - Additional orders available outside of the kit)
  • Directly sampling from dried blood spots eluted from Guthrie filter paper
  • Validated with the automated Revvity™ (formerly PerkinElmer™) puncher instruments (Panthera 9 and DBS Puncher models) and BSD Robotics punchers
  • Full sample traceability from sample card ID up to results, via barcoded microplates
